My Tribute to Tonya Nicole Scriven

Tonya was my sister's best friend. Two days before Lisa's 16th birthday, we got a call telling us that Tonya had been struck by a car and killed on impact.

Lisa has been mourning her death since then, and has come to accept the fact that Tonya isn't there anymore.

But in a way she is. Every once in a while, I can see her behind my sister. Tonya always said that one day she would grow wings and fly to the mountains to find her people. Now, she is even higher than the mountains.

Everyone I know misses her deeply. All I could think of when she died was that she had finally grown her wings and was with her people. For the first few nights after, I had dreams of her putting things on Lisa's windowsill. The last dream actually happened. There was a huge white feather on Lisa's windowsill, although I never told her because I didn't think she would believe me.

I remember the night it happened my best friend, also Tonya's very good friend, gave me a call. She knew that Tonya had been hit, but she didn't know that Tonya was dead. She asked me what hospital Tonya was in so that she could go see her. It was so hard telling my best friend that someone we loved was dead. My other best friend already knew and comforted me when I called him. I have the greatest friends in the world.

Tonya had a little sister named Rachelle. I had only met her a few times and knew her well. I also knew that her life would never be the same.

Why do the people we love die so soon? Is it because God is angry with us? Is it fate? I can never get the answers to those questions.
